About Stress Free Cake Supports

Cake SupportsStressFree Cake Supports has its roots in rural South Dakota.  It began in the farm home of Vern and Arlene Haase in Scotland, a small farm community in southeast South Dakota.  Arlene taught herself cake decorating as soon as she was allowed to use the oven as a young girl, and has provided wedding, graduation, birthday, and all occasion cakes to multiple generations.  She was so frustrated with the current way of stacking tiered cakes with dowels.  “I found that the dowels were not dependable and hard for me to get in straight.  Since they moved so easily, I made sure there were enough of them to support the cake. I didn’t like the cake full of holes when it was served, and how the holes weakened the cake.  When I used the large cake supports, I lost a lot of cake.  When stacked, it would still be unstable; like a house built with sticks.”

Vern, who is extremely handy, loves to create gadgets and tools to make any job easier.  Together they tried a lot of different ways to make the tier system better. They decided that the supports needed to be fastened to something for stability, so the stainless steel ring with legs welded to it was created.  It was lightweight, food safe, dishwasher safe, and sturdy. Yet it was never just the right height and the cakes had to be adjusted to fit the supports.  The idea was born to weld a threaded bolt to the metal ring and have plastic legs that would move up and down on the bolt.  Now it was adjustable!  The end result is the StressFree product you know and love today.
After enjoying the ease of assembling and transporting a tiered cake with SressFree Cake Supports, Arlene decided to share with her fellow cake decorator group in Sioux Falls, SD at a “Day of Sharing”.  The response from her fellow cake decorators was so overwhelming that she and Vern were persuaded to patent, produce, and market this product.
Production of the product began in 1999 close by in the Scotland Maxwell Hutterite Colony.  Through many trial and errors, the product was being mass produced.  Marketing was really done by word of mouth as they did not have a web site for ordering.  Earlene Moore, a wonderful decorator from Texas, did provide information on her web site for accessing StressFree.  Arlene answered all orders herself in her home, packaged each one, and drove to her local town to mail them out; usually within 1 day.  Her favorite part of the business is, and has always been, visiting on the phone with each decorator who called.  She has formed many friendships through this that she treasures.  Her product was also advertised in the American Cake Decorating magazine and through the International Cake Exploration Society’s  (I.C.E.S.) yearly convention.  One of her delights now is to watch the Food Network’s Cake Challenge and Ace of Cakes as she realizes that her product is inside some of those amazing cakes.
This has been a real labor of love for you, her fellow decorators.   Although creating a business was not enjoyable to her; she pursued this with the same passion she used in decorating because she knew it would help others who were frustrated like she was.  Her dream is that you will enjoy your cake decorating more than ever before because the stress of assembly and transportation has been practically eliminated.
Today the product is passed down to the next generation.  Her daughter Diane and her husband Peter are the new owners.  They have the same commitment to providing you a great product and have added this web site to aid you in your ease of ordering.
